Various Union Labor leaders are feeling the heat (boo hoo), Obamacare has screwed their union serfs and but good, the serfs are pissed off and complaining, and the Union goons are complaining that Obama betrayed them. It seems that they believe that Obama, Reid and Pelosi promised them that their union members would be exempted from all of the odious requirements of Obamacare. As P.T. Barnum was known to say, theirs a sucker born every minuet.
Labor leaders who have spent months lobbying unsuccessfully for special protections under the Affordable Care Act warned this week that the White House’s continued refusal to help is dampening union support for Democratic candidates in this year’s midterm elections.
Leaders of two major unions, including the first to endorse Obama in 2008, said they have been betrayed by an administration that wooed their support for the 2009 legislation with promises to later address the peculiar needs of union-negotiated insurance plans that cover millions of workers.
Their complaints reflect a broad sense of disappointment among many labor leaders, who say the Affordable Care Act has subjected union health plans to new taxes and mandates while not allowing them to share in the subsidies that have gone to private insurance companies competing on the newly created exchanges.
After dozens of frustrating meetings with White House officials over the past year, including one with Obama, a number of angry labor officials say their members are far less likely to campaign and turn out for Democratic candidates in the midterm elections.
“We want to hold the president to his word: If you like your health-care coverage, you can keep it, and that just hasn’t been the case,” said Donald “D.” Taylor, president of Unite Here, the union that represents about 400,000 hotel and restaurant workers and provided a crucial boost to Obama by endorsing him just after his rival Hillary Rodham Clinton had won the New Hampshire primary.
Taylor and Terry O’Sullivan, president of the Laborers’ International Union of North America, laid out their grievances this week in a terse letter to House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Senate Majority Leader Harry M. Reid (D-Nev.), saying they are “bitterly disappointed” in the administration.
A White House spokeswoman declined to comment on the union leaders’ claims that they were misled. A person familiar with Obama’s meeting with the labor chiefs said he “listened to the group’s concerns with empathy” but explained that the law would not permit the administration to take the steps they requested.
Obama administration officials and some outside experts said that if the unions got their way, people enrolled in their plans would be indirectly getting two tax benefits while most Americans get only one.
In December, Labor Secretary Thomas Perez proposed some changes for plans that cover unionized and other workers.
But in the letter to Reid and Pelosi, O’Sullivan and Taylor wrote, “If the administration honestly thinks that these proposed rules are responsive to our concerns, they were not listening or they simply did not care.”
I’ll take “What is knowingly and intentionally lied to then for $1000.00 Alex” No, sorry, no sympathy what-so-ever for these assholes.
During the 1970’s and 80’s when the Steel Industry was collapsing in Pittsburgh there was no one single agent that could be singled out as being responsible. The Federal and State government created a draconian regulatory environment and massively increased the regulatory burden on the Steel Corporations. Management of the Steel Corporations made one bad decision after another starting with failing to modernize their facilities and attempting to compete with brand new highly efficient foundries in Asia with technology and facilities designed in the last half of the 1800’s.
These were without a doubt crippling blows to the American Steel Industry, but the fatal blows, these came from the Union leadership. Over the decades that American Steel ruled the world, the Unions had forced concession after concession from the corporations. Wage compensation, insurance and pensions were the envy of the modern world.
The problem was, that after decades of always getting what they wanted, the Union leadership absolutely could not accept that they had already exceeded the concessions management could give them without bankrupting the corporations. Government over regulation and Management lack of foresight had placed the Steel Industry at the very edge of bankruptcy, and the only thing standing between bankruptcy and the Steel Industry, was the Unions. The problem was, that the Unions had already staked their line in the sand on the wrong side of the bankruptcy precipice. Their intransigent stand and unwillingness to accept reduced compensation and benefits was the final nail in the American Steel Industries coffin.
Now mind you, I am not saying that the collapse of the American Steel Industry was entirely the fault of the Unions, it wasn’t, nothing is ever that simple. The Governments involvement and Managements stupidity were things that could have been worked around had the Unions recognized just how dire the situation really was. Instead, by taking their no compromise position the Unions doomed their industry.
Why this long drawn out story about the failure of the American Steel Industry? Because it should have been a Darwin Award teachable moment for every single Union in America. The problem of course is, that due to the fact that the majority of senior Union Leadership being socialist/Marxist it wasn’t. This is exactly why Union Leadership so joyfully jumped on the Obamacare bandwagon, Obamacare is socialized medicine.
Like every good Marxist useless imbecile, the Union Leadership believed that once their Marxist Utopia came into existence, they would be given a very prominent seat at the tables of power. Now they are discovering what the foot soldiers who put Lenin, Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot and every other Marxist dictator in history discovered. They are discovering that they were lied to and are now a very inconvenient liability.
The worst of it is that just like with the American Steel Industry Union Leaderships decisions which put 90+ percent of their Union members out of work and destroyed their pensions in the process, that it wasn’t just their own Union members that were going to suffer. The shortsightedness of the Unions helped inflict Obamacare on the entire nation. Believing that they would be exempted, the Union Leadership didn’t give a rat’s ass what the destructive burden placed on non union Americans would be. Now that they are discovering that they are not exempt, they are wailing and gnashing their teeth, looking around them for sympathy.
Union workers represent only around 15% of the American workforce. 15% of the American workforce basically told the rest of the American workforce screw you, we’re getting golden Cadillac plans and since you aren’t union you guys can go to hell. Surprise surprise surprise, you union assholes, looks like you pushed us off the cliff and into the abyss only to discover that you were always going to be coming with us. As for that sympathy you are looking for, remember when you told us, screw you you’re not union so were going to ensure you get screwed so that we don’t, yea, we remember it to, so shut the hell up you are getting no sympathy or comfort.
In fact, when the time comes, don’t even bother being surprised when the long knives come out and you Union assholes are the turkey being carved up. As they say… Payback is a bitch mother fucker.
