The United States and Russia have agreed that Russia will deal with the identification and confiscation of Syria’s Chemical weapons. This should have been a no brainer right from the very get go.
There was coverage of the prospect of this happening by the time Quotes of the day went up last night, but this morning it seems the news is official. A deal has been struck, and it’s pretty much everything Vladimir Putin was insisting on and nothing that the Obama administration wanted for insurance.
U.S., Russia reach agreement on seizure of Syrian chemical weapons arsenal
The United States and Russia agreed Saturday on an outline for the identification and seizure of Syrian chemical weapons and said Syria must turn over an accounting of its arsenal within a week.
The agreement will be backed by a U.N. Security Council resolution that could allow for sanctions or other consequences if Syria fails to comply, Secretary of State John F. Kerry said.
Kerry said that the first international inspection of Syrian chemical weapons will take place by November, with destruction to begin next year.
I’ve been watching some talking heads on CNN this morning trying to spin this as some sort of a win-win, but that sounds like an awful lot of lipstick to try to paint on one rather sickly pig. On the plus side, if you weren’t interested in a war where we wind up helping one of several sets of bad guys, this clearly will be a win. But if you’re monitoring the domestic and international politics and power plays in action, this wound up being nothing but a big old black eye for Barack Obama and John Kerry, while returning Vladimir Putin for a strutting turn on the world stage as a power broker.
News Flash for Jazz Shaw and anyone else out there surprised that Vladimir Putin is a world class power broker. Russia was a world class super power before the communists took over in 1917, and when Marxism finally collapsed in the Soviet Union, Russia did not cease to be a world class super power. Contrary to popular thinking, there are more than one super powers here on little ole planet earth. The United States, Russia, China, Great Britain, Germany and Japan are all STILL super powers. Not all super powers are bellicose or malevolent.
The Japanese barely maintain enough of a Military to be more than a National Defense Force, but that does not mean that they are not a super power. Look at their economy and then remember your history. After WWI Germany was all but disarmed, it took Hitler just a few years to rearm Germany and nearly conquer the entire world.
Under Marxism/Communism Russia was a bellicose malevolent super power, today, Russia is no longer a bellicose malevolent super power. What Russia is, is a super power determined to protect their national security interests. Yes, kiddies, Russia has National Security Interests just like the United States does, and Syria does constitute a very significant National Security Interest for Russia.
For those who either do not know, or haven’t been paying attention, the geographic location of Russia precludes it’s having any naturally occurring warm water deep blue naval ports. This means that come winter time, Russia’s navy either has to be at sea, or it is locked in frozen ports. Syria has provided Russia a warm water winter port since the 40’s. So, yes, Russia has a vested national security interest in what happens in Syria.
Not only does the United States not have any significant national security interests in Syria, the US interfering in Syria’s internal affairs amounts to the same degree of rouge interference that China bombing Mexico to curb or halt illegal narcotics traffic would. Yes, Vladimir Putin is taking an obvious delight in giving Barack Insane Obama an atomic wedgie in public, but given the national security interests at stake for Russia Putin’s making a fool out of Obama is actually quite gentle and good–natured.
So yea, Putin pulled Obama’s underwear up over his head, pretty mild stuff compared to what, say, the old Soviet Unions Nikita Khrushchev would have done, which would have been to fill the Med with Russian Warships and tell Obama in no uncertain terms, a military strike against Syria would constitute an act of war with the Soviet Union.
Again, the United States is not the only nation on earth with vital national security interests, and while we may be the biggest dog on the planet, that does not for one second mean that those other countries are going to automatically roll over and show us their bellies every time we growl. The surest and most certain way to start another world war, would be for any one of the worlds super powers to ignore the fact that every other nation on earth has vital national security interests. To fallaciously assume that every other nation on earth both is obligated to roll over whenever they growl, and would actually do so.
Yes, what is happening in Syria is the Russians problem, it always was the Russians problem. How Vladimir Putin has dealt with it so far speaks volumes about the changes in the national psyche of the Russian people and their government. Putin has showed a remarkable degree of restraint, otherwise, well, Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia of the mid to late 50’s does come to mind.
